The SLA holiday banquet & toy drive is approaching. This is an event organized with the purpose to benefit the homeless children living at the Salvation Army. A donation of a toy for children ranging ages of 1-16 is needed by each student in order to get into the entertainment area, and buffet meal. At the entertainment area, there will be an amazing Battle of the DJs, and of course, dancing will take place as well.
This will happen on December 3, 2008, from 11:00 pm - 14:00 pm. It will be a big and exciting day for HCC Central students, see you there!
This Friday November 21, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at HCC Central Campus- the 2008 formal induction ceremony of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society will take place. Jesús Terrones, a Harvard '08 Graduate will be the guest speaker for this event. PTK inductees and their families are invited, as well as anyone who would like to attend and listen to Mr. Terrones speak about the steps he had take in order to get into Harvard, and how he wants to contribute to the community these days. This Friday, November 14, The United Student Council will be having a meeting at 10 am, room 101 LHSB. The purpose of the USC is to enhance student life on campus by representing the students interests at a district, local, and national level. Therefore, if you want to make your voice heard and express your interests as a student, don't let this opportunity pass you by.
If you are planning in dropping a class, you might want to do it before next Thursday, November 13th. Dropped classess after that date will get F's instead of W's. So hurry up!
Yesterday, Thursday 6th, it was a historic day for HCC. The new Learning Hub was officially innaugurated. A ceremony took place in which speeches were given by Dr. William Harmon President of HCC Central Dr. Harmon, members of the Board of Trustees, and the President of SGA Charles Lingerfelt; later the ribbon cutting took place, and finally delicious food was offered. 83.48% voted for Barack Obama
13.87% voted for John McCain
2.64% voted for Bob Barr
For Senators:
83.17% voted for the Democratic Party
12.21% voted for the Republican Party
4.6% voted for the Libertarian Party
Today HCC Central students got the chance to vote for their favorite candidate in the 2008 Mock Presidential Election. The following form was given and these are some of the students that voted:
15 students are required to guide people around the new building on the day of its Grand Oppening. If you want participate you should attent the meeting on Monday, Nov 3, at either 106 or 101 in the new learning hub.

The first edition of the Officcial HCC Student Newspaper, ''The Egalitarian'' is available at HCC Central in the following places: Fine Arts building, Business Careers building, Student Lounge area in the SJAC building, as well as next to the Police Department office. Get your copy before they are all gone!
This Friday October 31, the HCC fashion students will be organizing their annual Halloween Flash & Trash Fashion Show. All the designs are created out of recycled materials; just by saying that in the previous shows there have been dresses made out of coke cans, grapefruit peels, and chopsticks you can get an idea of how this event will be like. The show will take place at the Heinen Theatre, from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, and there will be a 10$ entrance fee. Call this number for more information 713-718-6152
It is very likely that you have already started using the installations of the new Learning Hub Science Building, but actually it has not been officially inaugurated. Many Departments are still in process of relocating to this new structure, and have not started operating there. Therefore, the grand opening and ribbon cutting will take place on November 6, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, be there and witness this historic moment of HCC Central.

In order to promote a healthy style of life, as well as exercise, SGA Central is organizing the contest of The Biggest Looser. This means that throughout a period of 30 days, 30 participants will compete to lose the most weight. The winner of the contest will be awarded with a spring semester free membership to the HCC Central gym. If you are interested you should get in touch with the SGA.
Today the 8th Annual Common Book Conference took place at the South West Campus. For this event a book is chosen, and several students present their opinions and expressions about it. The book to be argued is selected by the students through a voting system and must have certain requirements, which include: having clear ties to the college mission and defining scholastic intellectual development for new students. The one selected for this year was ''Generation Debt'' by Anya Kamenetz.
HCC had the privilege of welcoming the author herself, and listening to a presentation she gave about jobs and the economy, healthcare, and the cost of college. Kamenetz pointed out that nowadays there is an immense amount of freelancers, people who change jobs frequently; and that it has become harder to find a job because of the significant growth of the global competition. She emphasized that currently 30% of people under the age of 30 are uninsured, and that 54% are worried about the health care costs. The Yale graduate writer also mentioned that the average cost of college is 54.356 $, and that the average salary of a college degree holder is 50.000 $ compared to the 23.000 $ of a high school dropout. She finally advised the public to use online tools in order to organize their finances and try to avoid debt.
After the presentation of Anya Kamenetz, a panel which consisted of five students who represented the Honors College, expressed their impressions about the book, and some of them even mentioned how they felt identified with the difficult situations written in it. Finally, the President of the HCC Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa gave a speech stating his impressions as well. It was a very pleasant and enriching event.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is organizing a halloween costume party on thursday october 30th at 6 pm. It will be held in the SJAC building, rooms 107/109. Students with an HCC ID will get free entrance, all others will be charged 5$. You are welcome to bring guests.
There will be delicious food, the best music, and of course great people! The best costume will be awarded with free membership to the HCC-Central fitness center. Spread the word, tell all your friends, and look for the flyers that will be posted around campus very soon. See you there!

On Friday October 17, the non-profit organization ''Nuestra Palabra'' organized a book reading session with the literary icon, Ana Castillo. She conducted a reading of the first pages of her latest book ''The Guardians'', answered questions, and signed books. The Pulse of HCC was able to interview her; she gave us a sneak peak of the book, explained how the interest of writing developed in her, and where she went to school. Find the interview here:
